WARNING: SPOILERS ALERT
In our review of The Amazing Spider-man we summed up the difference between Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s version of “Your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man”, and this film confirmed just how much more suited to the role Garfield is. He is able to transfer the humour from the comics in to the film brilliantly, and he delivers his lines much more convincingly than Maguire ever did. Instead of the all-out geeky Spider-Man of Maguire, we saw the charming more convincing Peter that we have grown to love over the years.
A lot of people have been complaining that the film was more of a love story and that there should have been more action in the film, and yet with the main villains Electro and Green Goblin, and the introduction to either Sinister Six or ASM 3 villain Rhino, you should have no complaints, whether you are fans of the comic book or not. If you have seen Spider-man 3 (see our review of The Amazing Spider-Man for our negative feedback about this film) you will see that too many villains can spoil a film, but this does not apply to ASM 2. One of the main complaints about this film is that there are too many loose ends in the film, but this is the middle man between the universe that Sony is trying to create to rival Disney’s Marvel universe.
The ending to The Amazing Spider-man unfortunately falls flat. Electro was supposed to be the main villain in the film, but when it came down to it he hardly fought Spider-Man and was killed way too easily. This disappointed many of the audience, including me, as we felt attached to the way in which all Max Dillon wanted, was to be seen. Jamie Foxx created an electric performance (see what we did there) and it was a shame that his demise was so quick. Dane Dehaan’s twisted performance as Harry Osborn was chillingly fantastic and completely different to James Franco’s turn out. If you have ever seen Chronicle then you’ll have seen how superbly he portrays the villain, and you will know that he has the ability to give you the chills. Having known this, there is no surprise that he created a fantastic character here. The only problem I have with the part Harry played in the film is that any fan of the comics knows Norman Osborn is the true Green Goblin and Harry is either HobGoblin or New Goblin. As a die hard Spider-Man fan this is a travesty and it’s not going to be rectified, as Norman Osborn is now dead.
One thing I am very excited about is the news of Sinister Six and Venom films. It is going to be interesting to see how the universe will develop, but it would be great to see Carnage vs. Venom in the spin-off.
Overall, even with the flaws visible in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, this is a fantastic edition to the franchise and finally the fan base should have something to be excited about.
