Number 5- Tangled: The modern Disney films are undoubtedly a better watch because of their strong female characters, and Tangled is no exception. The injection of humour is still there, and as well as being a touching story, Rapunzel’s is gripping and full of adventure. Although it’s rare for a Disney film to be devoid of talking animals, Pasqual the Chameleon still succeeds in being hilarious through expressions and gestures alone. Overall, ‘Tangled’ is a great film that will have you laughing one minute and crying the next.

Number 4- The Princess and the Frog: A film that broke many boundaries in the Disney-verse, The Princess and the Frog is another representation of strong women facing problems. Tiana has a voice, and a funny voice at that. Her interactions with all of the other characters will leave you in stitches, and the constant stream of one-liners will leave you giggling for days afterwards. These combined with possibly some of the best music in a ‘princess’ film so far and a storyline really different to others, I’d definitely recommend this film.

Number 3- How to Train Your Dragon: You may think that a film about Vikings and Dragons is going to be harsh and maybe slightly unpleasant to watch, but with ‘How to Train your Dragon’ it is very much the opposite. The main character, Hiccup, is such a funny and likeable character; the underdog feel to him is extremely relatable, and his charm and whit make you root for him throughout. It is a touching comedy with a great moral message and truly a great film to watch.

Number 2- Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is a beautiful film. You can’t not love the main character- Flint. He has such an amazing outlook on the world that just makes the film so special to watch. Combine this with the vocal talents of Mr. T and Neil Patrick Harris, and of course a little bit of a quirky romance, and you have a film great for almost anyone. Also the sequel, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is worth a shout, if only for the amount of food puns. We counted about 25.

Number 1- The Cat in the Hat: Apparently, this film is the reason that there are not more live action adaptations of Dr. Seuss books. Theodor Seuss Geisel’s wife complained that the Cat in the Hat does not reflect the wholesome family friendliness of her late husband’s books, so she stopped them from making any more. And it’s a damn shame, because this film is hilarious. Though short (only 1hr 22mins) every minute is filled with brilliant jokes that would be funny for adults, teenagers and children alike. And it seemingly never gets old. You will find yourself quoting it for weeks after watching.

I am a firm believer that there is no shame in watching the odd Disney or DreamWorks film. However, one risks navigating a minefield of cheesy jokes and unfunny slapstick. If you’re new to the world of kids’ animated films, here are my top five that are definitely still funny (if not funnier) for grown-ups.
